A Golden Flash For A Day!

All I can hear in my head is "Stayin' Alive" when looking at this photo.

By BFF

In my last post I wrote about a group photoshoot at an abandoned warehouse. That was so fun and more importantly it allowed me to meet other models and photographers. I feel that event gave me an “in” with the local modeling and photography community. This is something I’ve really wanted to do for a long time and with help from others it’s coming to fruition. What I didn’t know about this day was that it was about to open another door. There was another photographer who saw a picture of me about 6 months ago. I did a photoshoot in preparation for an LGBTQ gala event that I ended up not doing but those photos still made their way to the Internet. She didn’t know who I was nor had any contact information until one of the photographers from the “Girl’s in the Window’s” shoot posted the pictures he took of me. She contacted Jeff who then gave my information to her. Mia from Mia Turquoise Image contacted me through Facebook. We had multiple conversations and we even FaceTimed so she could see my closet so she could help pick out some outfits for our photoshoot.

I was really touched by Mia because she sought me out. Up until now, I always initiated contact and this time it was initiated by someone else. We arranged to meet on Friday, July 26th at 10:00am. In preparation I again got all my accessories ready; jewelry, shoes (10 pairs!), and some big floppy hats that I borrowed from Kandi for another shoot! I packed what I could on Thursday night because my car is parked outside our garage. We are moving so the garage is full of boxes! Lately I have had to walk out of my house in full Sherry mode to get into the car! Mia also did some preparation on Thursday and got some cheap sunglasses for the shoot. On Friday I got up, did my nails quickly and only put on foundation because Mia wanted to do the rest of my makeup.

Upon arrival we parked in the shade, my car behind hers, and as soon as we got out of our cars gave each other a big hug! That immediately put me at ease and even more excited for the day! The back hatch was open on her car and she had a stool and her makeup in the car and she got working on my face right there in the street! It was a rush of emotions and people were walking and driving bye! Some would look or slow down but we just kept doing our thing. Mia did my hair for the first set of pictures.

The first outfit was the yellow top and burgundy colored shorts. I would have never paired the two together but it was such an amazing outfit! She looked at the jewelry I brought and pulled out a necklace, bracelets, rings and earrings. I taught her something because the earrings she picked out looked pierced but I showed her how I cut part of the post off and with the backing pressing against the back of my ear it appears my ears are pierced! She picked out the pink shoes and added the yellow hat from Kandi’s collection and off we went. You, by now, might be wondering why I titled this post what I did. This photoshoot took place in Kent, Ohio. Kent is home to Kent State University and the mascot is the Golden Flashes! So…I played off that plus my first outfit was the bright yellow top…again, a nod to the Golden Flashes! With all the outfits we just went about our business and no one paid any attention to us. When we were done taking pictures in one outfit we went back to the cars and Mia changed my makeup to reflect the new outfit! As you can see I did put my wig on. I received multiple compliments about my hair and outfits!

The second outfit was the blue one piece jumpsuit. Again, Mia picked out jewelry and we debated on what shoes to pair with the outfit, flats or heels and because of the length of the pant we settled on the blingy flip flops. Mia put a white belt on me which I wouldn’t have done. Again, we were on our way around town taking pictures wherever we wanted! Compliments! We stopped at a coffee shop and each got a cold green tea and sat outside and took a few pictures! After multiple pictures we made our way back to the cars and I changed into the third and final outfit.

Mia paired the colorful maxi skirt with a pink lightweight sweater, again I wouldn’t have done it! And of course the pink shoes. Since time was limited we stayed close to the cars. There was another cute little bistro on the street with tables out front. Mia had me do some walking shots and I think the one picture resembles Reece Witherspoon in Legally Blonde! After about 30 minutes we were at the cars saying our goodbyes and she snapped the headshot of me. For me all of the other pictures were amazingly fun and girly girl and I couldn’t be happier with them. But my favorite picture of the day is that headshot. Mia said that that’s how she sees me. When I look at that picture I’m looking into my soul. It’s just me, it’s how I see myself as well. Just the girl next door ❤️. As I drove home I reflected on how lucky I was and how I not only know another photographer but more importantly made a new friend. I look forward to spending more time with her! Hope you like the pictures 😘.

Stay beautiful-Sherry

Editorial comment: I try not to step on our Contributors’ posts. I have already told Sherry this in one fashion or another. This is incredible work! Many of these types of things, including things I have done, are wonderful, but to anyone outside our realm, noting of note. These are truly so well done. An awesome model, but more importantly, a true artist behind the camera. The artist is always the catalyst, always the visionary. Sherry was amazing, Mia absolutely crushed it! As I already told Sher, this made me both very happy for her and incredibly sad as she drifts away from me (for very good reason, life inserting itself into the equation. She’ll deny this, but as we’ll discuss later this week, I’ve seen this movie a hundred times). This will mean nothing to anyone, but this post is already marked as a “Kandi’s Favorite” here.

I couldn’t agree with you more! The photos Mia took were by far the best that have ever been taken of me. She really knows how to capture the true essence of the moment. Definitely an amazing day ❤️

  4. Sherry, these pictures are fantastic, Mia certainly knew how to bring out the best in your outfits and, as you said, to look into your soul. 6. Sherry,
You were so lucky to be contacted by Mia , as a professional photographer I know how hard it is hard to find that time , never enough hours in the day to follow through ideas .
I like the way she approached the shoot , she wanted to bring the woman out in you so she chose makeup and clothing items wisely . Also as a professional I would have posed you differently but saying that her poses were fine , it’s a very subjective thing , It’s the small points that make a difference , watch sharp elbows and make the most of elegant arm and wrist lines , they are important to the lead the eye painlessly around the subject . Head and shoulder portraits should always be shot at eye level as they tell the story about the sitter deep into the soul .
It’s often a good idea to check out the photography of Hollywood Idols , they demanded flattery so photographers had to know all the tricks both in posing and lighting .

    1. Teresa,
