Gesamtkunstwerk…

By Alexandra Forbes

…is a German word describing a combined body of work. This Flickr page represents such a thing for Alexandra, in which my body serves as a canvas for exploration of the feminine mystique. Some of the more astute will notice I’ve made about 10% of my photos publicly visible, a mix of my personal favorites and memories with friends. This particular photo was never posted for some reason, and I thought it an appropriate accompaniment for this post.

The Alexandra journey is essentially complete. It didn’t start with the aim of having a conclusion, but that has become the case. And I am comfortable with that. It is like the many other artistic adventures I’ve undertaken that follow a similar evolution – a creative impulse, the excitement of beginning, the pleasure of full realization, and the gradual diminishment of satisfaction that gives way to the promise of new pursuits.

Alexandra has been a nearly 20-year era of expression. And like a gallery show where I meet wonderful people sharing similar interests in beautiful things and intellectual stimulation, so it was that I met many people as I displayed my work. Thank you for your friendship and encouragement and know that I am well and happy. I will continue to lurk here for the memories and to make sure I don’t neglect those tenuous connections I’ve made over the years.

Be well! Be safe! Be happy!

Alex left a treasure trove of beautiful pictures and thoughtful essays about his (the preferred pronoun here) feminine journey, which I will share here over time. We knew/know each other in the real world, but I fear we will never see each other again. The ongoing fragility of connections (with people like me)…

  1. Good Morning Alexandra, and Kandi,
The words and images of Alexandra Forbes have intrigued me from the first time I encountered them years ago. The point of view Alexandra expressed, the ‘weltangshauung’, if you will, was similar to my view of the art and craft of en femme presentation.
I was delighted to read Alexandra’s descriptions and explanations for why the world of en femme presentation was so captivating. The departure of Alexandra for other pursuits will leave a visual and intellectual void in this community. I would like to thank you (both Alexandra and, of course, Kandi!) for your contributions to this community and wish Alexandra well in all undertakings taken on. Enjoy all you encounter!
    Best to you,
    Marissa in Ohio

    1. Alex is a personal friend an I admire his (preferred pronouns) ability to revel in this and walk away. I know the circumstances behind this decision and that doubles my admiration. Alex may never respond to comment here, but I know he is happy we are sharing this different and intellectual looks at all of this.

  2. Alex,

Your 20 year journey is one to admire, not only for the lovely woman you created but also for the way that you are bring her to a close. Someone has to truly understand themselves at a deep level to do what you have done. I am sorry to see Alex go but am comforted in knowing that she is going for a very good reason. It was a pleasure to have met you at Keystone 2023 and I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

  3. Alexandra,
As an artist , I do like the adventure of creating new work but finished work never diminishes with me because I create work that reflects my surroundings or my adventures , if they remain with me they will hang on my walls or if I sell them i know someone else with enjoy the same pleasure .
In the same way I can never let Teresa diminish because there is no “HE” to return to . Rather than considering myself as a piece of artwork I’m more like a book that ends when Teresa ceases to be , I’m just hoping my life still has many chapters to go !

  4. Thank you all for your kind words over the years. And thank you, Kandi, for generously offering space on your wonderful blog to share an idea or two. I definitely want to keep in touch, my friend!
