Like another poster on this blog–the one the blog is named after–I’m a fan of rock music. Nine years ago, I decided I could combine two of my pleasures–listening to live music and dressing–and double my fun. Since that first concert–U2–I’ve lost track of how many shows I’ve been to dressed, but it’s at least fifteen.
This year, it’s been seven, if you include tribute bands. Three artists/bands; Joe Jackson, Courtney Barnett, and Death Cab for Cutie, and four tribute bands, for R.E.M, the Beatles, Tom Petty, and an 80’s music night.
The latter two were a couple of months ago, and my BFF Michelle was able to attend both.
The Tom Petty show was at a local venue called The Pageant, where I also saw Joe Jackson. Michelle decided she WOULD be the American girl, in red, white, and blue. I decided I would be with Michelle, so I might as well wear one of my fun dresses, a black sparkly strapless dress, not either age appropriate or venue appropriate–but being with Michelle helps me feel bulletproof.
About a month before, we went to see a band playing moody bands from the 1980’s, including The Cure, Talking Heads, and R.E.M (the band was the same as the R.E.M. band I saw earlier this year). The venue was the City Winery, which is a small venue. Michelle and I were accidentally color coordinated, she wearing a long gold and white dress, and I wore a sparkly gold hued dress I had bought a few weeks before during my trip to In-Dee for the Final Four.

It was a warm May night, so before the concert we ate outside at a nearby Asian restaurant. We enjoyed both the dinner and the show. The tribute band did a good job of playing a number of popular Tom Petty songs along with some not as well known.

The food was good and the band was good. At our table of eight, we were joined by three gay guys, a fourth male friend of theirs (unsure of his orientation) and a female friend of theirs. They were amusing and entertaining, although they talked a bit more during the songs than I prefer.

The female friend was also a bit lit, enough so she pulled out a cigarette and lit it. To their credit, one of the group saw it and told her to put it out before they got kicked out. They invited Michelle and I to join them after the show at a bar in the LGBT part of town, but we declined (I had a Triathlon the next morning at 7 AM about an hour’s drive from my house, so I needed my beauty sleep).

Live music, fun dresses, great company–what more could an American girl ask for?

I always LOVE reading what you’ve posted! It’s also true that one picture is worth a thousand words.
To get both in one package is the BEST of all worlds!
