Memorial Day: The day I wrote a blank check… +1+1

Gwen keeps bring it!

[Yes, this was written back in May. At least we got it posted by Labor Day.]

Memorial Day weekend is rolling up and I’m over here thinking about all the graves I’ve stood at, all the brothers and sisters who didn’t come home, and the ones who came home changed forever.

I fought for your right to hate me.

Yeah, I said it. USMC veteran. Some of us knew we were trans while we were still in. Some of us figured it out years later, like me. But every single one of us signed the same blank check to this country.

Shout out to all my fellow vets! ❤️

We loved her enough to bleed for her even when she didn’t always love us back. That’s not weakness — that’s the kind of stupid, stubborn love this country was built on.

We didn’t fight so everyone would agree with each other. We fought so you could call me a freak at the cookout if you want… and I could still tell you to go piss up a rope while I grill my burger next to yours. That’s the deal. Messy. Loud. Free.

So this weekend, when you’re raising a drink, remember: the price on that freedom wasn’t paid only by the people you see on TV or the ones who look like you. It was paid by all of us. Straight, gay, trans, whatever. We showed up when it counted.

This country still beats every other option on the menu. Flaws and all. And as long as there are veterans willing to fight for it — even the ones you don’t understand — there’s still hope we can keep it that way.

Semper Fi. Even to the ones who wish I (trans woman) wasn’t here.

AuthenticAF or Clickbait Example?

“Hey fam, buckle up because your favorite chaos gremlin is back with another 2 AM gluten-free pizza epiphany (extra toppings, because if I’m stress-eating my feelings, I’m doing it right).

If you’ve got real influence – like, your notifications are basically a full-time job – do you owe your followers and the community some flawless ‘set the example’ performance? Or is the move just showing up as your gloriously messy, authentic self?

I’ve always voted for authenticity. I’m transgender, and when I introduce myself, I’m not sliding in with a curated TED Talk on ‘How To Be The Perfect Trans Role Model.’ Nah. I’m the girl who once tried fixing a broken heel with superglue right before a first date in Miami… and ended up literally stuck to the bar stool for 20 minutes while my date pretended not to notice. True story. I finally peeled myself free looking like I’d lost a fight with industrial adhesive.

Or that time I was at the beach trying to ‘pass’ during my early transition days, got absolutely roasted by the Florida sun, and ended up with a tan line so wild it looked like I was wearing invisible socks. I laughed about it later with a stranger who turned out to be super kind – we ended up chatting for an hour about bad transition fashion fails. Moments like that? That’s the real stuff.

Because let’s be honest – most people only meet us through screaming news headlines or Aunt Karen’s whispered gossip after one viral clip. News isn’t news; it’s a clickbait battle royale. ‘Which version gets more rage views?’ They spin, they omit, they manufacture drama like it’s their side hustle.

I want folks who meet me to walk away going, ‘Gwen was funny, real, tripped over her own words sometimes, but made me feel seen.’ Maybe next time they cross paths with another trans person, they give them a little grace instead of side-eye. If that’s setting an example, great. If not? Still great.

Trying to please everyone is like trying to make decaf espresso – technically possible, but why ruin perfectly good coffee and your soul?

As I always say: ‘Be so authentically you that the fake people get windburn trying to keep up.’
What’s your most chaotic authentic story? The one where being real backfired hilariously or actually connected you with someone?

Drop it below – I collect these like bad decisions collect regret.

IS REALITY INHERENTLY OPPRESSIVE? 🤔

Hey friends, it’s Dr. Gwen Patrone here—your favorite 65-year-old trans woman, former USMC Sgt, and recovering overthinker.

Lately in our community I keep hearing “Everything feels so oppressive!” And yeah, I get it. Transitioning after 60+ years of “maybe later” will make you question the universe’s playlist. But is reality the villain here, or are we sometimes just craving a big group hug of validation and acceptance?

Look, reality’s got rules. Gravity doesn’t care about my fabulous heels (trust me, I’ve tested this). Biology has its quirks—I’ll never be a biological female, and that’s okay. I’m a proud hybrid unicorn blending the best of both worlds: Marine grit with fabulous flair!

But does that make the whole game rigged against us? Or is it just… life being life?

As my mom (bless her) used to say with a wink: “Honey, the world ain’t fair, but it does have good coffee and cute dogs.” 😂 And she’s right.

I’ve stretched more dresses than I care to admit during my “secret experiments” phase, dealt with the jiggle physics of finally getting my 42H/I dreams (water balloons were a disaster—don’t ask), and the daily grind in a deep red area where I live. Oppression? Or just plot twists in my epic comeback story?

To me, it’s just life being life. I choose to be the causal factor in my life, not the effect (reaction) in the Cause and Effect dynamic. This way I have more control over my life.

Here’s the comedy antidote: We’re not victims of reality—we’re the ones who get to remix it with self-love, small daily wins, and a dash of stoic “control what you can, a glass of Pinot Grigio and let sass the rest.”

Seeking validation from the world is like expecting your cat to applaud your cooking. Cute idea, but you’ll be waiting forever while the real feast is inside you.

So let’s flip the script, my beautiful humans. Accept yourself fiercely, integrate every part of your journey (masculine power + feminine grace = unstoppable), and watch how “oppressive” reality starts handing you opportunities instead.

BOOM 💥 You’re not broken—you’re becoming.

Who’s with me on choosing joy today?

Drop a 💖 if you’re ready to own your hybrid magic. And remember: The universe isn’t out to get you… it’s probably just distracted by better WiFi somewhere. 😂

  1. Gwen,
I was preparing myself to avoid the glaring headlines or more in my case tittle-tattle between my neighbours . Just over eight years ago walked away from marriage and set up a new home twenty miles away . Obviously my intention was going full time as Teresa , the big question was could I pull it off ? I knew very few people which hopefully would work in my favour apart from one or two transgender friends in the area , at the time I thought that would be enough . Through various incidents of having items delivered to my home by mistake I quickly met my immediate neighbours , I had two things to sell , one was the idea of setting up an art group in my home for the local community the second was it would be as done Teresa . I simply told them if they happen to see a blond lady in the garden or getting in her car it would be me . It wasn’t intended to shock anyone I wanted to nip the problem in the bud of neighbourhood tittle-tattle , which it did . Was it brave or was it stupid ? Well the simple answer is there are no rules to this game I had to build a new life on solid foundations , people needed to know irrespective if they approved or not . Perhaps the key words are respect and trust rather than validation , this is why I discovered very quickly that I couldn’t live with the duel identity , conviction is important if you are going to gain respect and trust .
Some may say it was easier for me because I had cut the ties with my wife , I no longer had to answer to her for my actions , OK she did still try and influence me , very harshly at times , I had to ride that storm for a year or so . To me the saddest part was how a person I was married to for over forty years could treat someone they apparently loved so cruelly ? A transgender person does not wish to hurt anyone , understanding the truth for others might be difficult at times but the need isn’t a malicious act yet others can be very malicious towards you .
